We absolutely loved listening to our recordings after the wedding. We have a record player, so it made it extra special to listen to them on our own personal record. We thought it was hilarious because the A side has very sweet, sincere, and clear messages, and the B side was recorded once everyone had a couple of drinks in them. My younger sister Jane was a 47 year old lawyer, college professor, and the single mother of a seven year old son when, about 11 years ago, she first developed symptoms of muscle weakness and incoordination. Ultimately, it was determined that Jane had that most horrifying disease – ALS – also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, an progressive and invariably fatal motor neuron disease. Due to the young age of her son at diagnosis, Jane opted to live as a paralyzed and ventilator-dependent person in order to continue participation in raising her son and to see him grow to adulthood, if possible. Time went on and Jane was forced to medically retire from her faculty position when she could no longer walk or drive safely to work. She eventually became a resident at an assisted living facility for neurologically ill/impaired individuals. This past December, I was struggling to come up with a Christmas gift idea for Jane. What do you give a totally paralyzed, and ventilator dependent person, but who’s mind is still as sharp and alert as ever? I googled, “Christmas gifts for hospice patients”, and found Life on Record. Jane received several calls from her former colleagues, friends, and family to her Life on Record 800 message line. Jane died March 4, 2015. In the week prior to her death, on her last day of consciousness, she listened to her messages. I could tell that they pleased her enormously, and I was so thankful to have found Life on Record for her. I am so happy and grateful for your service! I believe my sister died just a little happier due to her messages from Life on Record.

How often do you have so many of your friends' and family's voices captured at once? Perhaps at your funeral, which you never get to experience. My 93-year-old grandma. A childhood friend who knows things about me my partner doesn't know. The dear friend who introduced us at her birthday party at the House of Prime Rib. A message completely in Kiswahili, which neither of us speak. My wife's cousin who spoke about my wife's father, who I never got to meet because he died from MS. Family members who said, "May God bless your marriage." A running joke across several messages throughout the night from two more recent, and now best, friends pretending to be our children calling from jail to come bail them out.

It's like a slice of life, a reminder of the color and richness of the characters and relationships that surround us. The marriage is about us, but so much more than us. Our guests all had their own experience at the reception, separate from us. That made putting this event together all the more worthwhile, and it's something we wouldn't have fully known without giving them the chance to tell us that.

No written guestbook can match the power of connecting the sound of someone's voice to their words. There were 130 people at our reception. It would have been tough to hear all of that through direct conversation … and when would we have had time to dance?!

When planning our wedding at Onteora Mountain House, our guiding intention was to center and celebrate Black queer love while honoring the village that sustains us. During our ceremony, we had our loved ones recite Community Vows, explicitly promising to be our sources and resources of memory, storytelling, archive, and mythmaking.

For us, the audio guestbook wasn't just a fun add-on; it was the literal manifestation of those vows. Our wedding was vibrant and alive, and there is something profoundly special about having a vinyl record that brings our community's voices back within arm's reach. Distinct from cards or written words, there is something so tangible about hearing the exact cadence and joy of our people sending love. It allows us to fill our home with their presence, even years later.

Because we had the physical vintage phone at the venue and also sent out a WhatsApp blast with the call-in number, our guests who were there in person, as well as those who couldn't make it, were able to leave messages while they were still fully steeped in the energy and spirit of the weekend. A wedding goes by in a blur, and there is only so much time to be fully present with every single guest. The audio guestbook became a way for us to capture deeper exchanges and angles we would have otherwise missed.

The messages ranged from incredibly deep and reflective to completely hilarious. Some guests who called the morning after the wedding specifically qualified that their voices were raspy and apologized because they had partied so hard and had so much fun. Another special layer was added by one of our dearest friends, who gave a speech sharing the exact moment they knew we were destined to be together. They prompted the rest of the guests to think about their own moment they knew, and so many people ended up leaving those specific memories on the recordings for us to find.

We cherished this living archive so much that when it came time to press the vinyl, we used PhD-level methodological tagging to create the track order and a custom collage of our wedding photos and small touches for the vinyl cover art. We built a spreadsheet analyzing and coding every single voicemail by length, speaker, and emotional category – using tags like "Grounded/Felt Foundational Shift," "Narration of the Moment," "Wishes for our Relationship," and "Funny/Silly" – to perfectly curate the emotional rollercoaster of Side A and Side B.

The website is a little wonky and the final order process was confusing but the final product is amazing. It’s such a simple service for people to use and the speaker was much nicer than I expected.
